Hey, so many people are making a stink about the casting choices for the live action version of the best cartoon ever made, i thought I'd put in my 4 and a half cents. For one think, I am satisfyd with the castig. Not happy, but satisfied. So if your a whiny little "AANG AINT WHITE" person who can't get off their high horse, please feel free to leave. Take a peppermint on the way out. I do, thought, think the casting is an interesting choice. Here's how it's supposed to go down.
Water Tribe- Largely white and native American (interesting, because they are the most homogeneous in the show)
Earth Kingdom-Oriental Asian (Interesting, as they are the nation with the most diversity in the show)
Fire Nation- Eastern Indian (VERY interesting choice, since most of the "Asian" Characters are from there)
Air Nomads- White (They're all dead anyway...)
Jackson Rathbone-Sokka
Dev Patel-Zuko
Nicola Peltz-Katara
Noah Ringer-Aang
Jessica Andres-Suki (rumored)
Here's my thoughts on the casting, as far as IMDB goes...
I had NO IDEA so many people were pissed about the casting. I mean, Jesum Crow. Sorry guys, But I agree, Aang is white. He's always looked white to me. And Katara and Sokka are Inuit, so they aren't Asian either. As for Zuko, well I think and INDIAN is at least close to oriental. At least he's Asian. But really, a Boycott? I don't think it's RACISM, but a lack of well trained or talented YOUNG Asians in the industry (IE-Mainstream actors.)
Now, just because there aren't any Asians playing the front characters, that does not mean that there wont be any. Iroh can't be done any other way, and if they do a sequel, neither Can Toph.
The only nation that can be called homogeneous is the Water tribe. Otherwise, the other nations people tend to vary in appearance, the only race I haven't seen is black. It's kinda hard to tell with anime.
Not that it should really matter, I mean, this is a FANTASY, and we're dealing with Countries and races that don't actually exist. Maybe the characters aren't meant to have any REAL race at all. Zuko's family looks Asian, but they have yellow eyes. The water tribe looks Inuit of Native American, but have blue eyes. The Air Nomads and Earth kingdom DIFFER so much form person to person, that, other than their names, they are totally different. And what the heck is Ty Lee supposed to be? Maybe they aren't any REAL race at all, but a mixture of fantastical races.
While I agree that ans Asian should be playing a lot of the characters, I'm not all pissed about it. I mean, come on guys, do you really think it is out of racism?
All right, all right. SORRY, damn guys. I agree, some of them SHOULD be Asian, but I'm not gonna boycott the movie because they aren't. My point is that I don't CARE enough about a cartoon, even if it is a cartoon I love, being made into a movie with white actors. Hell they made the Honeymooners black, lets make team Avatar white!

But seriously, I KNOW that it has a HUGE Asian influence, and I KNOW that the casting SHOULD be Asian, but the fact of the matter IS that they AREN'T. Boycotting wont solve anything. It's the director's choice, and I don't think it was made out of racism, especially since M Night Shyamalan IS NOT WHITE.
I think some characters are clearly Asian, like Zuko, Mai, and Toph. I also think some clearly are not, like Sokka, Katara, and, sorry, but with his light skin, gray-blue, and round eyes, Aang. In fact, I think a lot of characters are meant not to represent any particular race at all, like Aang, Suki, The Mechanist, and Ty Lee (Besides their names, of course.)
BTW, assuming I'm American because I don't care if the actors are white, and saying that Inuit is close enough to Asian is just as prejudiced as the casting.
Plus the actor playing Zuko, and the directors' not being white is a big hole in the white supremacy theory.
Ant that is my rant, the end.
